A SCIOS inspection is a mandatory or recommended inspection of technical installations (such as heating and electrical installations) to ensure that they are safe, efficient and environmentally friendly and meet legal and/or insurance requirements.
Inspections are carried out by certified companies according to the rules of the Foundation for Certification of Maintenance and Inspection of Combustion Installations (SCIOS).
The specific scope of the inspection depends on the type of plant (e.g. Scope 1-7 for combustion plants, Scope 8-10-12 for electrical equipment).
What is a SCIOS inspection?
- Purpose: To provide assurance that the installation complies with legal requirements and/or insurance policies.
- Performance: Certified companies carry out the inspection according to SCIOS standards and guidelines.
- Certification: The SCIOS certification scheme guarantees the quality and professionalism of inspectors.
Why is it important?
- Legal obligation: For some installations, such as diesel-driven combustion plants, a SCIOS inspection is required by law.
- Insurance: For other installations (e.g. electrical installations under Scope 10), the insurer may require this inspection to meet policy conditions.
- Safety and environment: The inspection minimises risks of fire and other hazards and checks for environmental compatibility.
What types of inspections are there?
- SCIOS Scope 1 to 7: Inspection of combustion plants.
- SCIOS Scope 8 to 10: Inspection of electrical equipment.
- SCIOS Scope 11: Inspection of explosion-proof installations.
- Specific requirements: The frequency of inspection may depend on the type of plant and its power. For example, a diesel genset with a thermal input power greater than 100 kW should be inspected every two years.
What should you do?
- Owner: You are responsible for arranging the periodic inspection and maintenance of your installation.
- Company: Check that the company carrying out the inspection has a valid SCIOS certificate and has the authority for the relevant scope.
